SORRY... but blabla

I am ambivalent about the word sorry. That´s not to say I don´t acknowledge a person who apologizes for a made mistake and tries to apply that lesson to future actions. We all fail at times, we all hurt other people unintentionally, we all have a tendency to put out behaviour we later want to excuse ourselves for.

But how many times have you heard "sorry" as sheer rhetoric? How many times have you heard "sorry" as a direct move to absolution? There is a difference between the "sorry" that is used to begin something and the "sorry" that is used to end something.

What if a "sorry" is placed over the feelings and needs of the one who gets the apology? "Sorry" easily wipes off critique and opinion. "I said I am sorry, what do yo want more?" Before we go into our own accountability/responsibility (the choices and decisions we make) we often start plotting the excuses. Was it the bus, the dog, the neighbour this time to explain why we arrive late... (we know it was just that we needed to fix the damn hair...)

The possibility of "sorry" is to value that we care for and respect the other - if only a bit late. Everytime we use it to cover up lack of attention and focus, we put it out to inflation. And what to do then if we truly mess things up?

absolutely (very) true! you pointed it out frankly and firmly...perhaps we all better try to be respectuful :)
instead of saying "sorry" too often

Luckily most of us have a 'sorry editor' and know which sorries mean what.
Maybe everyone is so immune to the word sorry we could substitute a subliminal phrase and no one would know.
"give me chocolate, i'm late."
Hmmmm...I might try this.

What you have written abaut sorry is brilliant. I emphasize in special the difference between the "sorry" for begin and another "sorry" for to end. I think that all your words create a wonderful reflection of that word so "badly" used sometimes.

emmm... I hear and dance :"sorry" By Madonna :) but really my favorite song is: "sorry" by Tracy Chapman

Sitting here reading along and nodding in whole hearted agreement (yes yes, tutt tutt), then I reached the bit about creating an excuse for being late before we even arrive and suddenly felt very guilty. I do do that! Oh Dear.

Not sure I'll get away with "Couldn't get out of bed, too cumfy and warm, and what's more it'll probably happen again tomorrow".

You make some good points. Sorry is one of those words that's lost much of its meaning. One thing I am sorry about is that I can't see the detail of your illo...everything is so small and I'm sure I'm missing all ther wonderful little words. What I can see looks great...I love the little figures and their expressions and gestures.

Where have all your pictures gone?! Or is it just me...I'm sorry that all I can see at the moment is little red crosses before my eyes! I'll come back later.

I read your post the other day.Afterward, I went to meet a friend...I was late. Normally I would do the "sorry, but(insert made up excuse)". Maybe it was your post, but I said, "I'm late...I decided to do "blahblah blah" before I left. (It felt good)

Thanks all for not making me feel sorry for this preachy post :)

Janet, see, its a recipe! Actually my one rule for notorious-late comer friends is that I can be accepting of this terrible habit if they never never plague me with stupid excuses. I think it makes both parts feel better.

Lu, don´t worry, I dance to Madonna songs, too :) (if noones looking of course)

Val, *blushing* :)
