TEA

Before sitting down for a jolly round of good tea, the Old Ladies took a walk with their dogs.

There is a belief that "Ostfriesen" (East Frisians) are peculiar in everything they do. One thing they are especially peculiar about is their tea ceremony. Up to five times a day East Frisians drink strong, black tea, usually served with Kluntjes (a rock candy sugar, melting so slowly it allows to sweeten several refills) and Rohm (cream). The candy makes a crackling sound as the hot tea is poured into the cup. No stirring, please! You only use the spoon to signal you´ve had enough tea by putting it into the cup. If you forget, Hallelujah, you´ll end up drinking 20 Koppkes (cup of tea) or more.

Too bad I live on Planet Earth so I can´t come over for tea ;) 20 Koppkes would make me burst - very NOT jolly for the old! Your image rocks! (no, not too much rocking ... gulp ... bathroom please)

If we start talking aout what people from different places put inside their tea cups you'll end up realising how diverse cultures are!
Not just biscuits are dipped into tea, but also cheese!
I enjoyed the illo as well

Wonderful work as usual!

My sweet and long departed grandfather used to drink tea from a glass rather than a cup, and after each sip he would let out a deep sigh that was the very essence of contentment - ahhhhh.

Anonymous, oh, is that where Australia is ;) Yep, a shame, I keep saying it, would be great to meet ya´ darling family!

Aynaku, I do have my educating moments... :)

Lu, East Frisia is indeed pretty, a very flat and green landscape with charming old houses and some windmills. Not too many people live there. But of the 2% Germans that do, 25% of the German tea consumption goes into!

Piero, perhaps they parallel-developed their tea ceremonies? Or did they all copy from the British? No, I am not Frisian, but close by, I am a Hanseat...

Fiesto, no way! Cheese into tea? Name me that culture, I am curious!

Andrea, thank you!

Neil, my grandfather had a similar habit, but perhaps there was not tea in his glass. I love in what fragments we sometimes remember our grandparents, thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Roz, but the big-eye award certainly belongs to you! (I noticed that on your site :))

Txartcgal, I love your new thumbnail!

I am frustrated! I have tried a few times today to load your page, but i just can't get your image. Is it coming from some other galaxy? I just know I'm missing something good! Can I say I love it based on the fact that I love your other work, or is that cheating? Well..what the heck...the text intriques me, so i am sure the image is equally arresting. I'll be back...I hope i'll be able to see it!

CRISTOSOVA hat gesagt…

Lol, Carla, actually this illustration is coming from Planet East Frisia :) Your compliment is happily accepted with red ear tops! On some days unfortunately the server where I upload my images is SLOW, but I can´t complain since they kindly enough host me for free.

I like it very much, good combination of things. Thinking of going to the station and asking for a ticket to Planet East Frisia, expecting very blank looks!

TheTart hat gesagt…

very fun... frisian tea, mmmm, what does it smell like, frisian weaves on friesstock?

Smooch,
The Tart

I like your characters and these are three interesting old ladies!

CRISTOSOVA hat gesagt…

Depends at which station you ask, Johnnynorms. I think at my station they would hand it to you right away, including some mean jokes about you probably not returning!

Frisian tea smells like dark, silent fenland, and a wee breeze of moor. The closer you come with your nose, the stronger you will notice the presence of candy rock sugar and if you take cream (which I avoid by all means!) something sourly creeps up for a second. I hope you were asking for that kind of a precise answer, Jody ;)

I find these old Ladies interesting, too, Aois, perhaps because they don´t speak much and that keeps me intrigued.

¡Gracias todo por sus palabras buenas!
